Day 10 - Wednesday July 1, 2009: Ne Hao Ma?

Woke up at 7 am today and ran with Danika again - only 1.8 miles today as I was exhausted from getting no sleep again due to the stinkin' air conditioner.

After getting ready for the day we went to our first Chinese Class. It was fun, we learned how to say and answer "How are you?" and "Are you hungry/thirsty/tired/busy?" We were taught by the English dept. chair, nut she left after about 15 minutes and left us with our "tutors."

I had my conversation class again from 10:20-12. It was painful today. I had told them all to come with questions prepared about American Culture (this is what they asked to talk about), but of course they didn't have any. So I was struggling to keep the conversation going. We ended up playing hangman for the last 20 minutes of class because I was out of ideas.

We headed back to our apartment for a pb&j lunch with Cheetos, m&ms and coke. For my one-on-one with Alvin today we are going with Danika, Iris, and Lydia to Jhong Li (spelling?) for some shopping. It was fun. We went to a department store then we looked at the small shops along the streets. Our "guides" were so funny, because while walking in the street they would grab your arm and say "take care" whenever a car was headed our way. I bought a shirt for less than US$3. Alvin, Iris, and Lydia also brought us to try some food - we had strawberry "ice cream" (more like gelato/sherbet), a pizza-like food that was fried dough with egg and some kind of hot sauce, and some awesome sweet potato fries. They were all good, but greasy.

On our way home Alvin brought us to a fruit market where we bought pineapple and watermelon for less than US$2! - we guessed the cost in the US would have been at least UD$12.

Later for singing class Danika and I merged classes as I was missing half of my students and hers were misbehaving. We worked on their songs in groups and watched the youtube videos again.

After class we walked back to my apartment. I asked the boy at the main desk if he spoke English, he said a little, and then he came up to the room to fix the water heater!!! Tomorrow we should get hot showers - Awesome! Danika and I spent time in my room talking about teaching ideas and her wedding while watching CNN or Discovery until CKE came home from his evening at the Night Market. He seemed to have a great time, which was a nice change of pace from his classes with the middle schoolers. He went to a huge photobooth, bought more PB, and tried some foods he actually somewhat liked with a group of 5 or so MBA students. We shared stories from the day, watched dirty jobs and went to sleep. What an exhausting job.

Maddie: “Sandy, what is that on your shirt? It looks like a teddy-bear.”

Sandy: “No, it isn’t a teddy bear, it is an ATTACK bear!”

(in regards to Marlboro shirt on her 13-year-old body)
